Frequently Asked Questions for Scout Parents

1. What age can my child join Scouts?

Scouts is for young people aged 10½ to 14. If your child is younger, we also offer Squirrels (4–6), Beavers (6–8), and Cubs (8–10½) at 22nd Stoke.

2. What activities do Scouts do?

Scouts take part in a huge range of activities, from camping, hiking, and cooking outdoors, to team games, problem-solving challenges, and community projects. We also run trips and camps throughout the year.

3. When and where do you meet?

We usually meet once a week during term time at our local Scout hut. You’ll receive full details when your child joins, including meeting times, locations, and contacts.

4. What uniform does my child need?

Scouts wear the shirt/jumper  and dark trousers associated to their section. Badges earned go on the shirt/jumper. We’ll let you know where to buy uniform and when your child needs it. Scout scalf (necker) is purchased from the group.

5. How much does it cost to attend?

We charge a small monthly subscription fee to help cover the cost of activities, materials, and insurance. Camps and special trips have extra costs, but we aim to keep everything affordable.

6. What if we can’t afford the fees or uniform?

We believe Scouting should be accessible to every child. Please speak to a leader confidentially—we may be able to help with uniform or reduce costs for camps and activities.

7. Do parents need to help out?

Scouting is run by volunteers, and we always welcome help—whether it’s running activities, managing admin, or lending a hand at events. Even a little time makes a big difference!

8. Is it safe?

Yes. All our leaders are DBS checked, trained in safeguarding and safety, and follow strict policies set by the Scouts UK. We carry out risk assessments for all activities.

9. Can my child try it before committing?

Absolutely! We usually offer a few taster sessions so your child can see if it’s the right fit before you register them.

10. How do we join?

Just contact us via our website or speak to a leader in person. We’ll let you know about availability, waiting lists, and next steps.
